The city of Leon was the first capital of Nicaragua until 1852. You’ll see its colonial legacy in most of its old antiques, buildings and churches. Leon’s beautiful cathedral is considered the most important colonial building in Central America. Its walls are decorated with the oleos and frescos of many great artists. Several prominent Nicaraguan men are buried below its arches.
Among them are Ruben Dario, the great Nicaraguan Poet and greatest advocate of the Castilian language. His tomb is located next to San Pablo’s statue. Afterwards, you’ll have the opportunity to visit Dario’s Museum churches including Subtiava, La Recoleccion, and La Merced.
