In Dickens Footsteps
Any Dickens fan knows that the famous writer loved nothing more than walking, talking long rambles throughout London to mull over ideas for his books. During this itinerary, follow in the famous author’s footsteps by starting out at the Charles Dickens House, at 48 Doughty Street. Though Dickens lived in several different London houses, this is the only one that survives. It’s certainly an auspicious place, as it is where he wrote Pickwick Papers, Nicholas Nickelby and Oliver Twist.
From the museum, you’re in perfect position for a rambling walk through important Dickensian haunts in Holborn. In Barnaby Rudge, Holborn is the thoroughfare Newgate prisoners use for their escape. Mrs. Gamp of Martin Chuzzlewit lived at Kingsgate Street, High Holborn, and Fagin’s den of thieves, from Oliver Twist, is located at Saffron Hill in Holborn.
You can get a terrific map which features locations significant to Dickens's work.
If walking is what you fancy, be sure to check out what's on offer at London Walks. They specialize in tours that delve into the city's historic past, and these walks are a great bargain.
